Count Your Blessings, Part Two: Name Them One by One (My Top 10)

I love the refrain from the old hymn "Count Your Blessings."

"Count your blessings, name them one by one,
Count your blessings, see what God hath done!"

It is easy to be grateful for your blessings on ambiguous terms, but start naming them...that is different. When you start to list your blessings, one by one, you can focus on the beauty of your life instead of the difficulties. Of course problems or trials come, but counting your blessings gives you perspective.

Since life has presented a certain set of challenges for us lately, I'm taking my own advice.  I'm counting my blessings. Here are my top 10 (in no particular order).

1. My God. He has never left me.  I can trust him completely. I can pray to him about everything. He works all for my good...whatever that looks like.

2. My family. They are a constant source of joy. My daughters fill my heart in ways I never thought possible. My best friend for a husband is everything I ever wanted or needed in a man. My extended family are always there for us and love us.

3. My health and the health of my family. I can appreciate this more fully since I am still recovering from double pneumonia.

4. Freedom. I have the freedom to worship how I choose, in the place I choose, with the people I choose. I have the freedom to write what I choose here.

5. Air conditioning. It might seem trivial, but the blistering South Texas heat is dangerous.

6. Education. I am grateful for the education that I received and for the education my husband is able to pursue. He will hopefully officially begin seminary work in the spring.

7. Our vehicles. I've lived without on occasion, but staying in the boondocks like we are, it'd be a long walk to the grocery store without it.

8. A roof over our heads. We are still searching for a place to live, but there are kind, generous people in our lives not willing to see us completely homeless.

9. Coffee. Again, I'm sure this sounds petty, but I love coffee early in the morning, afternoon, or evening; iced, hot, or blended. It doesn't matter.

10. Community. I value the community that comes with common belief in and surrender to Jesus Christ. I love the instant kinship created knowing you share the same faith. It is beautiful to see this connectedness demonstrated in spite of language, geography, or even life and death.

What about you? What blessings are you grateful for today?
