Hebrews--Week Two Study Questions

Welcome back to week two of our Hebrews study. Grab your notebook and open your Bible to Hebrews 2.

Question #1

The first word in this chapter is "therefore." Circle it, underline it, high light it...whatever you wish, but do take note of this word.  Anytime you see "therefore" in scripture it is a clue for you to pay attention to all that was said before because it is inextricably tied to what is to follow it.  With that being said, refresh yourself...what was the theme or main argument of chapter 1? Now read chapter 2 in light of that.

Question #2

As you read Hebrews Chapter 2 consider these questions:
--Answer the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the passage.
--Ignore the headings in your Bible and consider what is the theme of this passage?
--Did any verse stand out to you? Choose that one to be your memory verse.  I chose Hebrews 2:10, 17-18.
--Add anything new to add to the "Christology" section of your notebook.

Question #3

Look carefully at verses 1-4.
--Restate them in your own words.
--What is the "great salvation"? Who declared it? How did God confirm it?

Question #4

Read verses 5-18.
--Do you notice any references to Old Testament scripture? If so what verses? What is the author's purpose in quoting from the Old Testament? (remember who the original audience was).
--There is an emphasis on the humanity of Jesus. Why is this important?
--What do the followers of Jesus gain in verses 14-18? How does this affect you personally?
--Think about on all of Chapter 1 and 2, why should we listen to the message of Jesus over that of the angels?

Question #5

Verse 12 quotes Psalm 22, a psalm of anguish written by David. Matthew uses this psalm throughout his Gospel to portray Jesus as the ideal human and ideal sufferer.
     --Read Psalm 22
--What is the theme or main of this psalm? Note the different tone in verses 1-21 and 22-31.
