Sweet Pea loves Reading time...which the Literature grad in me loves. I hope I can continue to foster a love of reading in her. She has been so inquisitive lately about words. Everywhere we go she spells out any word she sees and says, "what's that say, Mommy?"
I know some people might disagree with me on this, but I've decided to go ahead with the next step in reading. She knows all her letters, most of her sounds, she understands letters make up words, she demonstrates understanding of directionality of print and phonological awareness. She does one to one matching in math, which should easily transfer over to reading.
So, here we are. We continued matching upper and lower case letters as well as putting the alphabet in order. We played a game from Playdough to Plato called "same sound, different sound." This was a great game. Not only does it require her to listen and identify the beginning sound, but it teaches the concept of same/different.
As for beginning reading, I introduced the sight word "is". She found the word in her books and highlighted it (they were laminated, so it wipes off).
A side note: highlight tape works great for this...I need to get more...mine is in storage.
We read books to reinforce "is" and did spelling chants. She had fun with that. Lastly, the notecard with "is" is put in the refrigerator at her eye level. We've been chanting "is" all day. Eventually we will move it to our word wall.
Math was great fun too. We played number basketball again (a couple of times, she loves it). She also matched a magnetic numeral to to correct amount of "friends." Then, I made a "Who's My Match?" Game with note cards and stickers. She had to match the numeral with the sticker notecard. This could easily convert to a memory game later.
In science we finished up the body unit, we talked about hands, legs, and feet. She's also even enjoying a book that tells her about what's inside her body. We might stay along that vein next week as well since she is showing such and interest.
That's about it for this week. Next week I hope to incorporate Bible in our learning time.
